SUMMER SAFETY GUIDE FOR DOG OWNERS
How to Keep Your Dog Safe, Comfortable, and Cool in Extreme Heat
As temperatures rise, so do the risks for your dog. Unlike humans, dogs don’t have the same ability to cool themselves down. They don’t sweat through their skin—they pant and release a small amount of heat through their paw pads. This makes them especially vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, even on seemingly short or routine walks.
This guide will help you understand how to safely exercise your dog during the summer, recognize the signs of overheating, and take action quickly if needed.
Why Dogs Are More Sensitive to Heat
Dogs are not built to handle high temperatures the way we are. Their fur traps heat, and their primary cooling method—panting—becomes less effective as the temperature and humidity rise.
Dogs at higher risk include:
How Hot Is Too Hot?
Here are general guidelines for determining when it’s safe to walk your dog:
Quick Check: Pavement Test
Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot to hold for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Safe Summer Exercise Tips for Dog Owners
You don’t have to skip exercise altogether—just modify it to keep your dog safe:
1. Time It Right
Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler (before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m.).
2. Choose the Right Surfaces
Stick to shaded grass or dirt trails. Avoid pavement, concrete, or sand that can burn paws.
3. Keep It Short
In warm weather, exercise should be brief and purposeful. Trade long walks for short outings paired with indoor play or training.
4. Stay Hydrated
Always bring water for both you and your dog, even on short outings.
5. Enrichment Indoors
Mental stimulation can tire your dog out without overheating. Use food puzzles, obedience drills, scent work, or trick training inside.
Important Afternoon Potty Break Tips
Afternoon walks in the summer should not be for exercise. When temperatures are high:
Signs of Overheating and Heat Stroke in Dogs
It’s critical to recognize when your dog is getting too hot:
Mild to Moderate Signs:
Severe Signs (Heat Stroke):
If you see these signs, act fast. Heat stroke can be fatal within minutes.
How to Cool Your Dog Down—Safely
If your dog is overheated:
1. Move to a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned space immediately.
2. Cool the dog from the paws up.
Start with cool—not cold—water on the paw pads, which help release heat. Then slowly work up the legs, belly, and neck.
Avoid drenching your dog or using cold water. Sudden temperature drops can cause blood vessels to constrict, which traps heat inside.
3. Emergency Tip:
In extreme cases, you can apply rubbing alcohol to the paw pads only to speed up evaporative cooling. Use a small amount and make sure they don’t lick it.
4. Offer small amounts of cool water.
Never force drinking.
5. Use a fan
or circulate air to help with evaporation.
6. Contact your vet immediately.
Even if your dog seems better, internal damage can occur.
